SNK was founded in 1978 as a subsidiary of Japanese video game giant Capcom. In its early years, it focused on developing arcade games for companies such as Namco and Konami. It was not until 1990 that SNK released its own console: the Neo Geo AES.
This console was a great success, both in Japan and the United States. SNK continued to produce games for the Neo Geo until 2004.
In 2001, SNK merged with Playmore Corporation, which became the new name of the company. In 2003, SNK released a new handheld console: the Neo Geo Pocket Color.
Today, SNK Playmore produces arcade games, mobile games and pachinko machines. It has also released a new handheld console: the Neo Geo X.
