The Type 89 rifle is a domestically produced 5.56mm caliber assault rifle that was adopted by the Self-Defense Forces in 1989. It was compact for a mainstay rifle at the time, and was designed to suit the physique of Japanese people. The muzzle recoil function of the flame retardant provides high control and good accuracy. The bipod is detachable, and it can share NATO standard STANAG magazines.
