1/700: Special 97EX1 - Imperial Japanese Navy Battleship Hyuga 1942 (w/o No. 5 Turret) (Reissue) [Fujimi]

From Fujimi comes the 1/700 Special 97EX1: Imperial Japanese Battleship Hyuga (1942) — a reissued waterline model depicting Hyuga after the No.5 turret explosion and subsequent modifications, now available as a special edition with exclusive parts.

The Hyuga, constructed at Mitsubishi Nagasaki Shipyard as the second vessel of the Ise-class battleships, was based on the preceding Fusō-class design with major improvements. After one major refit in the early Shōwa era, she entered the Pacific War. In May 1942, during gunnery exercises in Iyo-nada, an explosion occurred in her No.5 turret. The damaged turret was removed and replaced with four triple 25mm anti-aircraft mounts. Around the same time, experimental radar equipment was installed and tested, which she retained during her next deployment — the Midway operation.

Later, alongside her sister ship Ise, Hyuga was converted into a hybrid battleship-carrier to reinforce Japan’s diminishing carrier forces. She joined the Battle of Leyte Gulf under Operation Shō-1 and survived without damage, only to meet her end in July 1945, when she was heavily bombed and sunk by carrier-based aircraft in Kure.

Part of Fujimi’s acclaimed “Special” series, this 1/700 scale waterline model features exceptional surface detailing and precisely engineered parts for high accuracy. Based on the 2017 newly developed molds, this reissue includes limited-edition new parts exclusive to this version.

Paint and glue are required for assembly. The kit is molded in gray plastic, includes decals, and offers a historically accurate representation of Hyuga as she appeared in 1942 — post-turret explosion, yet before her conversion into an aviation battleship.
