1/700: Special 97 - Imperial Japanese Battleship Hyuga 1941 (Reissue) (Plastic Model) [Fujimi]

From Fujimi comes the 1/700 Special 97: Imperial Japanese Battleship Hyuga (1941), a highly detailed waterline model recreating the Hyuga before her conversion into an aviation battleship — now offered as a special edition with exclusive parts.

The Hyuga, built at Mitsubishi Nagasaki Shipyard as the second vessel of the Ise-class battleships, was based on the preceding Fusō-class with refined design improvements. After one major refit in the early Shōwa era, she entered the Pacific War. In May 1942, during gunnery exercises in Iyo-nada, an explosion occurred in her No.5 turret, leading to the removal of the damaged turret and replacement with four triple 25mm anti-aircraft mounts. Around the same time, experimental radar equipment was installed, which she retained even during her subsequent deployment to the Midway operation.

Later, along with her sister ship Ise, Hyuga was modified into a hybrid battleship-carrier to compensate for Japan’s depleted carrier force. She participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf under Operation Shō-1 and returned unscathed, before ultimately being sunk in Kure in July 1945 by carrier-based air attacks.

This 1/700 scale model, part of Fujimi’s renowned “Special” series, captures the ship’s form with intricate panel detailing and precisely divided parts for superior accuracy. Developed from Fujimi’s 2017 all-new molds, this edition includes newly tooled exclusive parts available only in this special version.

Paint and glue are required for assembly. The model comes molded in gray plastic, includes decals, and offers a historically faithful representation of Hyuga as she appeared in 1941.
