The 155mm Self-Propelled Gun M40 Big Shot from Tamiya’s Military Miniature Series is a 1/35 scale plastic model kit that recreates one of the most powerful artillery vehicles developed by the U.S. military during World War II. Based on components from the M4 Sherman, the M40 featured an open-top chassis equipped with the 155mm Long Tom cannon, allowing for greater mobility compared to traditional towed artillery. This innovation significantly reduced setup time, enhancing battlefield efficiency.

Operated by an eight-man crew, the M40 had a firing rate of one round per minute and a maximum range of 23.5 km when using high-explosive shells. A rear spade was installed to stabilize the vehicle during firing, and its 460-horsepower air-cooled radial engine provided a top speed of 38 km/h. Although production began in February 1945, only 418 units were built before the war ended. The M40 saw limited action in Europe during field tests but later proved its effectiveness in the Korean War, where it played a crucial role in long-range bombardment missions.
