Osamu Tezuka, known as the “God of Manga,” was also a pioneering figure in the world of animation, dedicating immense passion and hands-on involvement to its creation. Despite the collaborative nature of anime production, Tezuka actively sought to remain engaged in the creative process, producing image boards, concept art, key animation, and storyboards himself even during periods of intense manga serialization.

Osamu Tezuka: Animation Art Archives, published by Genkosha as a two-volume set spanning approximately 800 pages, compiles an extensive collection of materials created largely by Tezuka himself, with many being published for the first time in book form. This archival work provides an invaluable look into his contributions to anime history, documenting his visual development process across decades of groundbreaking work.

Volume 1 focuses on early television animation from the 1960s to early 1970s, including landmark series such as Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion, and Princess Knight, featuring original drawings, setting materials, and storyboards. Volume 2 covers later television works from the late 1970s to the 1980s, including special feature-length productions broadcast on programs such as 24-Hour Television, theatrical films, pilot projects, and experimental animation works.
