Launched in 1984 in the pages of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump, Akira Toriyama's original Dragon Ball was a very different series from what Western viewers would later encounter. After numerous escapades with young Goku, Toriyama took a five-year leap in the timeline of the story, and although his manga kept its name throughout its ten-year run, the animated adaptation was renamed Dragon Ball Z after 153 episodes. By focusing on epic, drawn-out battles instead of treasure hunts and martial arts tournaments, this version propelled the series to worldwide success.
